It was the first protests tied to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in April of 2000. D.C. Police corralled and arrested nearly 700 demonstrators.
A class-action lawsuit followed that resulted in a settlement agreement Monday.
The District of Columbia will pay up to $13.7 million to settle the lawsuit filed by the Partnership for Civil Justice on behalf of protesters and bystanders
.
Brian Becker was one of the protesters arrested and detained for hours who told Fox 5 the message from the settlement is not about money— it is all about constitutional rights.
“It says to every municipal government and law enforcement agency, if you’re going to trample over people’s rights, if you’re going abuse them falsely and if you’re going to hog tie them, then there is going to be a price to pay,” Becker said.
On average, the maximum payment to each person will be $18,000.
